MCHINJI, Malawi — A youth-led conversation on mental health broadcast earlier this year by Mudzi Wathu Community Radio has sparked a tangible shift in local health services, with district health authorities now offering regular counseling in rural and remote villages.

The radio programs featured young people openly discussing challenges they face, the absence of mental health resources, and the stigma surrounding psychological support. Their voices reached decision-makers, prompting the district hospital to train providers to deliver counseling sessions in four rural villages. Services have been offered once a month in each location since April.

“This initiative directly responds to the needs raised by young people on the radio,” said Mchinji district hospital mental health officer Bizwick Mwatibu. “We received a lot of demand from youth across the district after they listened to the radio programs,” he added, noting that around 50 young people contacted his office seeking help.

Beyond tackling mental health concerns, the counseling integrates discussions on youth sexual and reproductive health, addressing the psychological effects of early and forced marriage, gender-based violence, and reproductive decision-making. Local leaders say the combined approach is offering adolescents a safer, healthier path toward adulthood.

Health officials and community members alike credit the radio broadcasts with breaking silences, normalizing conversations, and paving the way for lasting support networks in Mchinji’s rural areas.
