Charles Rice

President and Chief Executive Officer

Chuck joined  Developing Radio Partners in 2012. ​His background is in journalism, management and media development.  For the past 15 years, Chuck has managed numerous media projects for organizations that include Internews, the World Bank, and the International Center for Journalists. Most recently, he has worked in Kenya, Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi, and Somaliland. 

 

In March 2019, he was a guest journalism lecturer at the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland. Previously, he has lived and worked on media projects in more than a dozen countries- including Timor-Leste, where he managed a two-year, five-million-dollar media development project. It included developing a four-year journalism degree program, establishing media houses around the country, assisted a community in setting up its own radio station, and establishing an online news agency. He has also designed monitoring and evaluation techniques to ensure journalism training programs are effective and meet the needs of the trainees.

Chuck spent nearly 18 years as a journalist with the Associated Press before he moved into development work. ​In 2003, Chuck received a two-year Knight Fellowship. This took him to Mongolia to conduct training workshops with journalists at community radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers throughout the country. It also launched his career as an international media consultant.

Rich has worked with humanitarian non-profit organizations for over 25 years.  He managed a regional Middle Eastern and North Africa media working group of leaders in print and broadcast media with Search for Common Ground.  He designed and managed international programs supporting freedom of the press, women’s rights, and human rights with Freedom House.  And he helped establish an international newswire service plus one of the first private TV stations in Iraq. 

 

Rich is a Certified Fund Raising Executive who has raised and managed over $50 million from government agencies, foundations, corporate donors and individuals.  He is a seasoned new business development and fundraising professional with experience in every phase of program management – from assessments and project design to program implementation and evaluation. 

 

He has served as Executive Director, Chief of Party, Senior Program Manager and development consultant to international, national and local organizations.
