(September 25, 2024) A recent series of radio programs on Gaka FM focusing on nutrition and food security has ignited a grassroots movement in Nyang'a village, in Nsanje district, Malawi. The broadcasts, which aired in mid-July, have led to community members embracing backyard gardening as a solution to improve maternal health and household nutrition.
Musa Cheha, chair of the Bangula father group, has emerged as a local champion for this initiative. Inspired by the Gaka FM program, Cheha has already helped establish nine backyard gardens in Nyang'a village and is actively working to expand the project.
"I listened to the program on Gaka FM and what I heard inspired me to introduce backyard gardens," Cheha explained. "I have been doing that at my home and I want people to practice that to improve nutrition in maternal health."
Cheha's advocacy goes beyond just nutrition. He emphasizes the economic advantages of home gardening to his fellow villagers:
Cost Savings: Families can reduce their food expenses by growing their own produce.
Income Generation: Surplus fruits and vegetables can be sold, providing an additional revenue stream for households.
The initiative is gaining momentum as Cheha collaborates with other villagers to replicate the success of the initial nine gardens.
The focus on improving nutrition through backyard gardening is particularly significant for maternal health in Malawi. Access to fresh, nutrient-rich produce is crucial for pregnant women and new mothers, potentially leading to better health outcomes for both mothers and infants.
